Yes. New variants pop up. All the time. Yes. Some of them will prove to be dangerous. No, none have thus far proven to have significant immune escape from the vaccines.

@jwildeboer if i understood correctly, isn’t that kind of the big deal with the vaccines building spike proteins for the immune system to train itself on, and those being thought responsible for COVID’s strong infectiousness?

so as long as they retain the feature that makes them so hard to contain, the vaccines can be expected to work to a reasonable degree?

heck, *even* if they prove to escape from existing vaccines, new variants are very much like new pandemics, and vaccines still protect you from the earlier variants. it makes no sense to refrain from taking a flu shot, or a polio shot, just because they won't protect from covid-19. even after some variants go virtually extinct, protection from the vaccine may still be valuable
