Moved all my (925) contacts from Apple iCloud to my Nextcloud instance hosted in Germany at a German hosting provider because both Apple and Nextcloud have good support for the open CardDAV standard. Everything JustWorks

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.netThe Nextcloud instance from Hetzner that I use comes with 1TB(!) of storage for just 5€/mo, including backups etc. That’s quite acceptable :) And yes, I am very aware of the fact that storing data encrypted in Nextcloud needs a few additional steps. And yes, other companies make similar offers. And yes, you can absolutely #selfhost too but that’s not the point of this thread. It’s about moving your contact list away from Apple to an open source solution, enabled by open standards.
(And, unfortunately as always, the reply thread immediately fills up with people telling everyone that THEIR alternative to MY decision is much better. Again. This only makes casual readers feel insecure and ultimately leads them to not take any step, as they fear they might make a wrong decision. Why are you people always like that?)

@luisfcorreia Annoying, sure, but that’s only for your customer account in Hetzners backend system. On your Nextcloud instance you get full suppport for international characters.

@jwildeboer Today I received the cancellation confirmation from our current IT service provider (M$365). The current plan is to move our entire organisation to a private environment hosted in Germany (Nextcloud). The clients will gradually be switched to an open source OS.

I was just just looking at Hertzner's auctions and planning to get a €40/mo system with 4TB of mirrored storage. Nextcloud is one of the things I plan to run.
@jwildeboer I did the same today, just ordered the nextcloud at Hetzner. Not sure how to handle the encryption in a good way right now.
@jwildeboer a Terabyte?! Dang, had I known that, if probably have migrated to them from Vultr. When I kept needing to add block storage (still only ~100GB, I realized I could self host at home with spare unused hardware.
