UPDATE: NOT TRUE Now that #Brother printers are joining the Dark Side of The Force with their firmware updates that start to look for original toner cartridges,
This story has been debunked and Brother has clearly stated that they do NOT check for original toner/ink in normal operation but do prefer original cartridges when troubleshooting, which makes sense.
Thanks to all who replied, I will happily stick with Brother :)
@jwildeboer Is Kyocera still in the game?
@jwildeboer oh. no. I might have to source an old Brother soon, my almost. decades old laser/scanner is going out of fashion soon
@jwildeboer I thought the last thing about that was, that the original poster misread an error message while stopping the brother software mid-install or something like that
@jwildeboer the article that surfaced a few weeks ago? the one failing the color registration with non OEM toner? I think that one has already been debunked. I also checked the technical diagrams for the printer and found no mechanisms to even identify OEM or Non-OEM supplies
@jwildeboer
Has this been confirmed now? I understand there were only some unverified and mostly old claims. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/03/brother-denies-using-firmware-updates-to-brick-printers-with-third-party-ink/
@jwildeboer they denied this quite vigorously. The person had borked their firmware update and it wasn't the cartridges.
@jwildeboer That Brother story was misinformation.
@jwildeboer I bought a Brother printer for not being evil, for a first set of cartridges I am probably going to stay genuine so by not being evil they are still selling cartridges!
@darranl They still are not evil. My Brother laser is happily printing with very cheap 3rd party toner since 8 years now ;)
@jwildeboer The company I bought from write to me and tried to get me to switch to a HP - that was a firm NO from me.
