#introductions

I am not totally sure if I have done a proper intro but here it goes.

My name is Stuart but you all know me by Stu.

I am a huge technology and music fan first and foremost, I also love open source decentralized platforms like Mastodon.

I love watching TV series and movies. I am a huge 007 fan. I love the Pearce Bronson era and I also love Daniel Craig Era.

I also loved all three movies from #SteigLarrson #thegirlwiththedragontatoo

I'm putting together some thoughts, data, and documentation for the #OpenWeb. I wrote it with friends and family in mind, fellow artists, not technical people.

I plan on sharing my path to free myself from walled gardens, as well as reflecting on the implications of AI on the open web and on our activity.

For now, here's my contribution. Don't hesitate to let me know what you think. Thanks!

I was so inspired by @sophie's excellent write-up that I wrote one of my own. It mostly echoes what she said, since we share a similar history with the web, but I wanted to add my own perspective.

For some, joining Mastodon might seem risky because "the server could shut down at any time" or because it's managed by a single administrator. While these concerns are understandable, Mastodon has far more safeguards in place compared to centralized platforms:

1. Admins are typically experienced sysadmins with a strong passion for server management.

2. It's generally recommended to have multiple admins (we have four).

3. Many servers have financial plans in place, such as donation systems. We have my company backing things up.

4. Infrastructure is often cost-effective, keeping operating costs low.

A few additional points to consider:

1. No server - or anything in life - is immortal. That's exactly why I chose the name mementomori.social (the stoic phrase "memento mori" means "remember death").

2. Web services come and go, but longevity is possible. My first website has been online continuously for 27 years (since 1998). While I've migrated servers a few times, the site itself has never gone offline. It will most likely happen after I pass away, but I hope my descendants keep it online.

Unlike centralized platforms - especially newer ones - that rely on user growth and profitability, investors can pull the plug at any time.

The decentralized Fediverse operates differently: sysadmins are committed to keeping their servers online and do so out of dedication, not for monetary gain.

Continued thread

And I must also acknowledge the challenges we're dealing with here. I'm just begging everyone to be cool if you see someone using the fediverse a bit differently than what you're used to, or goes on a bit of a rant to vent a minor frustration, or asks a rhetorical question.

Not everything requires a response.

If you mostly agree with a post, give it a like/star/whatever, and move on with your life. If you disagree, but the person isn't hurting anyone, then the post is not for you.

I just want the fediverse to be a safe place we can share together, where people can come to be themselves, and where we can connect and help each other. We all need this.

Happy 7th anniversary of becoming an official W3C standard, ActivityPub!

We're creating something truly special here with the fediverse, and I am so thankful for everyone who contributes to it, whether with your time, money, or just by sharing your thoughts, your creations, your silly little jokes. Keep it up!
